Safety in contact sports

How Round Connect supports safe contact in boxing and martial arts — head-knock protocol from the UK grassroots concussion guidance, sparring clearances, pairs within your club’s limits, children under their parents’ account — and what it never does.

In contact sports, who someone is today — their experience, their weight, a recent knock to the head — isn’t a question of comfort. It’s safety. Round Connect keeps that in front of the coach at the moment of the decision, and keeps a record that the club acted with care.

Head knocks

“If in doubt, sit them out.” A suspected knock — marked by the coach or by the member — takes the person out of contact at once and starts the protocol for the whole club. The days are counted from the UK’s public guidance on concussion in grassroots sport: no return to sport in the first 24 hours, no unrestricted contact or competition before day 21, and a doctor if symptoms last more than four weeks. Every coach sees where each person is.

Sparring clearance

A member spars when the club says so: a health form in the format your club and governing body use, and the coach’s clearance. Until then, the member sees what’s left as their next steps — not as a refusal.

Pairs within your limits

Your club sets the limits for weight, experience and age. Each suggested pair is checked against them and against active protocols and today’s notes. Warnings are shown; the coach decides, and every decision is recorded as the coach’s.

Today’s notes

“Neck” or “rib” — just for today. The partner is told “careful with the neck”, with no details. The reason stays between the member and the coach.

Weight

Weight is used for pairs and for one signal: a sharp change in a short time, so the coach can have a word. We never give advice on making weight.

Children

Profiles only with parents’ consent. The parent account (in development) comes first, and every safety message goes to the parents straight away. Minimum data, no photos, no rankings of children.

What Round Connect never does

  • It doesn’t diagnose. It can’t tell whether someone has a concussion and doesn’t assess anyone’s condition. It records a suspicion, keeps the protocol and reminds — the coach decides, and a doctor when there are symptoms.
  • It doesn’t forbid or grade. It suggests and remembers. Pairs, clearances and gradings are the coach’s decisions.
  • Heart rate is about effort, not health. No conclusions about the heart or blood pressure.
  • A signal is help, not a guarantee. The safety log shows that the club acted with care — as long as the entries are honest.

Your data, your club

Health information is special-category data under UK GDPR: it is stored only with separate, explicit consent. The club is the data controller; Round Connect processes data for the club under a data processing agreement. Health forms are stored as the club defines them — we don’t interpret them.
